Here’s one for Mom

Mother’s Day is only a month away, May 8, and reservations are rolling in, which means it’s time to let you know our plans. Like last year, we will serve a slightly smaller version of our regular menu and offer up a few special dishes for the occasion. Since it’s Spring in Chicago, you might be able to guess some of the ingredients that pop up. Our Mother’s Day brunch specials:

Carolina Golden Eggs – Carolina gold rice grits, fried oysters, artichokes, poached farm eggs, lemon hollandaise $18

Oyster Stuffed Palmetto Quail – Voodoo greens, poached farm eggs, file gumbo gravy   $20

Spring Mushrooms & Ramps –  Roasted morels and trumpets, fava beans, ramp greens, poached farm eggs, creamy grits   $20

Antebellum Rice Waffle – Duck confit, pecans, roasted ramp bulbs, poached heirloom duck eggs, duck jus   $19

Eggs featured will be from Moore Family Farm in Mokena, Illinois (stay tuned for pictures when we take a trip down there soon) and ducks and duck eggs come from Gunthorp Farm. Artichokes, greens, and favas, coming from out of the area, will be certified organic via Goodness Greeness. Ramps will be from Werp Farm. Carolina gold rice middlins and grits will come from Anson Mills and oysters are coming out of Hampton Virginia. All pecans served at Big Jones are via Three Sisters Garden – Tracey’s parents grow them on their small farm in Tennessee. Quail is by Palmetto Plantation just outside Charleston.

I often say that the number one thing that separates me from other chefs is that I love to do brunch. That’s not to say I enjoy getting up early in the morning – that part actually sucks pretty badly. But in the end it’s worth it because I believe brunch is a truly special meal, not just an opportunity to bring money in at another daypart (industry speak for selling stuff at a different time of day.) I love eggs, egg dishes, hollandaise, biscuits, waffles, the whole nine yards. I love brunch. If I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it right.

Our established Mother’s Day tradition of pouring complimentary champagne (good stuff) for mom until she’s content will continue again this year, so please do mom a favor and drive for her.
