We’re excited to announce that our Whiskey of the month for October is the newest release from Heaven Hill distillery, Larceny. It is a brand new bourbon currently on limited release in select markets, and we were alerted to its coming release when Paul had the opportunity to taste this excellent bourbon at Euphoria Food and Wine festival a couple of weeks back. Paul knew we had to have it and especially wanted to offer it as Whiskey of the Month so we could pour our members a complimentary taste of this bourbon while it is still exclusive. It is destined to become a classic.
Legend has it that John E. Fitzgerald in reality was a treasury agent not a distiller who used his key to pilfer from the finest barrels. His impeccable taste led to the barrels that he burrowed from to be referred to as the “Fitzgerald Barrels”. Now with the tag line of “a taste made famous by an infamous act” Heaven Hill has set the story straight with the release of Larceny. Like Old Fitzgerald Larceny is a wheated bourbon meaning that they use wheat instead of rye in their mash bill to go along with corn and barley. Wheat gives bourbon a softness in contrast to the spiciness from rye. Larceny comes from barrels that are 6 to 12 years old giving it enough age to bring out the vanilla and cigar box spices from the wood on the nose without over powering the notes of sweet corn and baked wheat that this whiskey exhibits. There are also notes of butterscotch and brandied cherries. Bottled at 92 proof the whiskey has plenty of wait in the mouth showing off more fruit characteristics from the wheat and giving you a long sweeter finish. Having only a limited release to specific markets at this time do come in and try the newest shining star to the Heaven Hill portfolio before the whole world knows about it.
It’s free to join the Big Jones Bourbon Society, just ask your server or bartender to sign up on your next visit. You’ll receive a passport to forty of our more than sixty whiskeys. On each visit, members are welcome to one complimentary pour of the Whiskey of the Month (WOM) which will usually (but not always) be a straight Kentucky bourbon whiskey. Big Jones Bourbon Society members will also receive invitations to members-only events such as whiskey tastings and whiskey socials.
Of course you’re welcome to enjoy any whiskey on our list at any time. We’ll mark off your passport as you taste each of the forty whiskeys, and once you’ve tasted them all, you will earn the distinction of Master Taster, and win tickets for two to a one-of-a-kind all-out whiskey dinner. As the ranks of Master Tasters grows, we will host a series of dinners for Master Tasters.
