September’s Whiskey of the Month is Woodford Reserve!

We are pleased to announce out Whiskey of the Month for September is Woodford Reserve. We’ve always enjoyed Woodford Reserve for it’s uniquely clean refreshing palate in spite of it’s hefty body, it’s beautiful fruity vanilla notes, and especially the unmistakeable aroma of clean, pure wood smoke. It’s always been one of the most unique and interesting (and delicious!) bourbons on the market even from a pure flavor standpoint, but after visiting the distillery in Versailles, Kentucky this past summer, we have a better understanding what makes Woodford unique, and why you should try it.

Woodford Reserve is one of the oldest distilleries in Kentucky, dating to the late 18th century when Kentucky was still essentially frontier territory. Unlike most of its contemporary counterparts, Woodford still distills in old copper pot stills, the likes of which haven’t been seen much around Kentucky for more than a century. These yield a “white dog” that is characteristically fruity and vanilla-laden from the corn, attributes which really help the smoke from the charred oak barrels stand out on the nose and palate in a way they don’t in most whiskeys. In addition, the white dog is also richer with a fuller body than you get from modern column stills, so it stands up better to aging – in fact, it needs more aging to balance the wood with the corn. Woodford Reserve’s lots, therefore, average 9 years old, yielding a rich, full-bodied whiskey that is still refreshing and easy to drink. In addition to the fruit, vanilla, and smoke, you’ll notice and enjoy floral aromas, chocolate, charcoal, and spice box. Bring your passport in for a complimentary pour!

It’s free to join the Big Jones Bourbon Society, just ask your server or bartender to sign up on your next visit. You’ll receive a passport to forty of our more than sixty whiskeys. On each visit, members are welcome to one complimentary pour of the Whiskey of the Month (WOM) which will usually (but not always) be a straight Kentucky bourbon whiskey. Big Jones Bourbon Society members will also receive invitations to members-only events such as whiskey tastings and whiskey socials.

Of course you’re welcome to enjoy any whiskey on our list at any time. We’ll mark off your passport as you taste each of the forty whiskeys, and once you’ve tasted them all, you will earn the distinction of Master Taster, and win tickets for two to a one-of-a-kind all-out whiskey dinner. As the ranks of Master Tasters grows, we will host a series of dinners for Master Tasters.
