June Whiskey of the Month: Medley Brothers!

Medley_Bros_Bourbon-529x1024We are pleased to announce our June Whiskey of the Month is Medley Brothers, a recently revived classic from the Charles Medley Distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky. Originally produced in the 1940’s and 1950’s, Medley Brothers’ production was ceased in 1958 when the label was sold. After a 55-year hiatus, in 2013 Medley Brothers was once again released, produced according to the original recipe and given 4-5 years in charred oak barrels.

Given a high corn mash bill with rye and malted barley, Medley Brothers is medium bodied, gaining a little spice from the rye and heft from the barley malt. Given a moderate amount of barrel aging, the grains are apparent up front on both the nose and the palate, given a lovely toastiness by the barrel aging, which also contributes caramel and butterscotch notes, with a nice waft of vanilla tying everything together. The medium-length finish is given character by the rye’s spice and leather characteristics. Bottled at 102 proof, Medley Brothers is delicious straight with a rock or two, or will contribute mightily to your favorite bourbon cocktail. Bring your Bourbon Society passport in for a complimentary pour early and often this month of June!

It’s free to join the Big Jones Bourbon Society, just ask your server or bartender to sign up on your next visit. You’ll receive a passport to forty of our more than sixty whiskeys. On each visit, members are welcome to one complimentary pour of the Whiskey of the Month (WOM) which will usually (but not always) be a straight Kentucky bourbon whiskey. Big Jones Bourbon Society members will also receive invitations to members-only events such as whiskey tastings and whiskey socials.

Of course you’re welcome to enjoy any whiskey on our list at any time. We’ll mark off your passport as you taste each of the forty whiskeys, and once you’ve tasted them all, you will earn the distinction of Master Taster, and win tickets for two to a one-of-a-kind all-out whiskey dinner. As the ranks of Master Tasters grows, we will host a series of dinners for Master Tasters.
