We are pleased to announce the next dinner in our Author Dinner Series, with chefs Megan and Colby Garrelts of Bluestem and Rye in Kansas City! The Garrelts run their restaurants just the way we like – as a family, and have just published their second cookbook, Made in America, in which they present a stellar collection of classic recipes with their signature style, making timeless Heartland cooking with a sophisticated modern eye. It’s erudite and sophisticated, yet down-on-the-farm honest. Some would say, and we agree, that the Garrelts are doing for Midwestern cooking what the current generation of superstar chefs from the South have done for Southern cuisine.

Colby and Megan both have thoroughly Midwestern roots, but we’d be dowdy not to mention their ties to Chicago, including long stints at the legendary Tru restaurant. Their dream of their own restaurant became a reality in 2004 with the opening of Bluestem, which John Mariani called “the most exciting restaurant to open in Kansas City,” and he wasn’t wrong – Bluestem has been the anchor of the dining scene in Kansas City ever since, the leading edge of a vibrant movement that makes it one of the best small cities in which to dine in America.

Some very smart folks have paid notice to the work the Garrelts are doing – Colby was named one of Food and Wine Magazine’s Best New Chefs in 2005, and was awarded the 2013 Best Chef: Midwest title by the James Beard Foundation, and Megan has been a semifinalist for Best Pastry Chef.

With Kansas City at the crossroads of America, this will be a really cool chance to see how the South and North meet in Kansas City, and enjoy some excellent recipes from this masterwork of Midwestern cooking. Megan and Colby Garrelts will hold court, tell stories and sign books, Kansas City jazz will set the mood, and you’ll enjoy food and drink from Made in America. Please join us for a very special evening.
