We are pleased as punch to announce our second annual Soul Food Family Dinner will be Wednesday, January 20 from 6-9 p.m. and will feature special guests Chef Stephanie Tyson and her partner Vivian Joiner of Sweet Potatoes Restaurant in Winston-Salem, North Carolina! Truth be told, I’ve met Vivian once and am still looking forward to meeting Chef Stephanie, but their reputation has preceded them in Southern food circles as being top notch people, with a beautiful restaurant everyone just seems to dig.
Consequently, when I visited Winston-Salem last September to promote the Big Jones Cookbook, their restaurant was at the top of my list so I had dinner there with my SFA buddy Carroll Leggett. Dinner was awesome! Their staff radiates warmth and hospitality and that speaks worlds about the owners. Even though we were there on a Tuesday night in September, Sweet Potatoes was packed and we had to wait a bit for a table. No worries of course because a formidable Old Fashioned was available at the bar, whereby I noticed a couple of books at the bar. Of course I thought right then how nice it would be to get them to Chicago to showcase their books and expose our guests to the sweet kind of cooking that takes place in Winston-Salem.
The last morning I was in Winston-Salem, I met Vivian at a restaurant leaders’ roundtable organized by the local Chamber of Commerce and planted the idea that I’d love to get them and their books out to Chicago. I’ll just tell you this: If you love good food, come to dinner. If you love good people, come to dinner. This is going to be a very special night so we hope to see you there.
The Soul Food Family Dinner will be Wednesday, January 20 and feature recipes from Chef Tyson’s two books, “Well, Shut My Mouth” and “Soul Food Odyssey,” copies will be available for purchase, and Chef Stephanie will be on hand to sign books and talk soul food. Good vibes and love of family and good food will flow, please join us for a special night.
