Col. E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel Bourbon, August’s Whiskey of the Month

TaylorIn a salute to one of Bourbon’s greatest legends, our Whiskey of the Month for August is Col. E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel. Produced, aged and bottled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, it is a fine example of the innovations the august Colonel brought to the bourbon industry after purchasing what is now Buffalo Trace Distillery in 1870.

Among Taylor’s innovations was the utilization of climate-controlled warehouses to even out the temperature variations over the course of a year’s aging, yielding mellower, more refined bourbons. All of Buffalo Trace’s E.H. Taylor whiskeys are aged in prime locations in Warehouse C, which was constructed in 1881 by Taylor, and proved to be an excellent warehouse for aging. Taylor was also a fierce advocate of stronger regulations for the Bourbon industry, which was indeed much like the Wild West in the 19th century. He was a key voice in the passage of the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, the first Federal legislation governing accurate proof listings on bottled spirits, which was successful in reducing fraud in the industry as consumers were given a label they could look to and be sure what they were getting.

In honor of this legacy, Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel Bourbon is bottled in bond at 100 proof. We regard this as fine sipping whiskey, benefiting from a teaspoon or two of cold water or a single nugget of ice. The aroma is rich, oaky, and buttery. It’s full-bodied on the palate with that quintessential first touch of sweetness giving way to moderate heat, aged tobacco, leather, and sweet spices. The finish is clean and quenching, with tea and dark caramel on the close.

We’ve been fans of the work Harlen Wheatley and crew have been doing at Buffalo Trace Distillery for years, and the E.H. Taylor collection is another great example of their dominance of the fine bourbon market. Bring your Bourbon Society passport with you any time in August for a complimentary pour!

It’s free to join the Big Jones Bourbon Society, just ask your server or bartender to sign up on your next visit. You’ll receive a passport to forty of our more than sixty whiskeys. On each visit, members are welcome to one complimentary pour of the Whiskey of the Month (WOM) which will usually (but not always) be a straight Kentucky bourbon whiskey. Big Jones Bourbon Society members will also receive invitations to members-only events such as whiskey tastings and whiskey socials.

Of course you’re welcome to enjoy any whiskey on our list at any time. We’ll mark off your passport as you taste each of the forty whiskeys, and once you’ve tasted them all, you will earn the distinction of Master Taster, and win tickets for two to a one-of-a-kind all-out whiskey dinner. As the ranks of Master Tasters grows, we will host a series of dinners for Master Tasters.
