Soul Cookbook Dinner With Chef Todd Richards

We are over the moon to announce the next dinner in our author series at Big Jones. Chef Todd Richards will be joining us from Atlanta in celebration of his new book Soul – A Chef’s Culinary Journey in 150 recipes. The book is a stunner, and we became instant fans for the sharp recipes, beautiful styling, and most important, the leading-edge energy which brings Soul to life as a new chapter in the story of soul food and African American culinary heritage. At over 300 pages and a hundred photographs, it is a visual feast as well as a loving narrative about a chef, his kin, and journey through the life.

Chef Richards is a kindred soul in many ways, including that he is largely a self-taught cook, and paid his dues over many years in the industry before garnering national attention as one of four chefs to watch in Esquire Magazine, an invitation to battle on Iron Chef, and a nomination for Best Chef: Southeast by the James Beard Foundation. We met at Rivendell Writers’ Colony in Sewanee, Tennessee during a summit on the topic of food, race, and class and quickly learned we share a vision of food as a cultural touchstone, at the center of our communities and a vehicle for bringing people together. In how own words,

“This book is a testament to what I’ve discovered on my journey and in my practice as a chef,” Richards said. “Creating and sharing are both spiritual acts. I happen to create and share food. When I look back at my experiencesgrowing up and creating in the kitchen with chefs like Jacques Pépin, it’s clear to me that food brings people together if we choose to use it that way.”

We are eager to welcome Chef Richards to Chicago and celebrate his story and his beautiful new book. Because this is an author dinner, the book is included in the price of dinner, Chef Richards will be here to tell stories, talk about the recipes, and sign books, and see to good vibes for the evening.
