Victuals, an Appalachian Dinner with Author Ronni Lundy

We are over the moon to announce our next author dinner for April 20, with acclaimed author Ronni Lundy in celebration of her new book, Victuals: an Appalachian Journey, with recipes.

We’ve known Ronni’s work for a long time, especially for her ground-breaking Shuck Beans, Stack Cakes, and Honest Fried Chicken, one of the first cookbooks to use personal stories, including many of country music’s most beloved performers, to drive the narrative of a regional cuisine, and one of the most important documentary cookbooks of the Mountain South.

Victuals is a book that is breathtaking in both prose and imagery, and the recipes included create a tapestry out of Appalachian cooking that belies the media-driven image of mountain folk, instead offering a picture of community, industry, and art that ushers the reader into empathy with these people who cling to the mountains, against all odds.

We finally got to meet Ronni a couple of years ago through the Southern Foodways Alliance, and she quickly became a dear friend as so many SFAers do. In honor of our shared connection, this dinner will be a Piggybank Dinner benefit for the Southern Foodways Alliance to further their work of documenting and celebrating the changing foodways of the American South.

Mark will put together a special playlist of mountain music from his substantial collection, Paul, Rey, and crew will man the kitchen to bring forth recipes from Victual, and Ronni will hold court, tell stories and sign books, SFA documentary films will be shown, and by the end of the evening, you’ll be as smitten with the mountains as we are.
